Crowns, Bridges and Partials

Crowns are made of porcelain and can replace a large old filling.  Crowns restore tooth function, address aesthetic needs, and enhance the health of your mouth.  A crown can protect and preserve the remaining natural tooth.  Porcelain crowns are similar to porcelain veneers; however veneers cover only the front of the tooth and crowns cover the entire tooth.

A bridge is a false tooth in place of a missing or extracted tooth.  A permanent bridge can be affixed to two crowns cemented on the neighboring teeth.  A Maryland bridge doesn’t involve crowns on either side of the missing space; instead a “wing” type retainer is bonded to the supporting teeth.

During this process Dr. Kellar will shape the teeth to provide support and specific fit of the final restoration.  Impressions are taken and sent to the lab.  A temporary restoration is made during this visit to protect the prepared teeth and keep you looking good.  During your second appointment the crown or bridge is permanently affixed using an adhesive bonding or cement.  Be sure to brush and floss twice a day and care for your crowns and bridges as well as you do for all your other teeth.
